Those who think they dwell where the wilderness is being transformed into a garden of the Lord, ought not to judge of Ross-shire by their experience, for here, alas! Some of them had formerly been priests, and while required only to read to the people, they could not be kept from going beyond their commission into the track of their old course of service. The workhouse is his best shelter and its pauper clothing his noblest livery. Alas, we are all of us more or less atheistic. In the world our temper is tried, and too often we become irritated.

You are a man of like passions, remember yourself, lest you also be tempted. His justification was that there was neither manse nor glebe at Killearnan, and moreover, he knew no Gaelic. But, after all, what is there in these things to render them incredible? Cessationism is the view that the apostolic spiritual gifts such as speaking in tongues, prophecy and healing have ceased after the passing of the apostles and the establishment of the New Testament.

The world and its trials can never be compared to the water which cleanses our feet; for that purifying stream we look to a far higher source; but it may be likened to the basin in which our feet are placed while they are being washed. The gospel was fully and faithfully preached in some parishes in those days. Gillespie was not claiming the type of prophecy that is Scripture. A few of the Episcopal incumbents laid themselves open to deposition by their disloyalty, and some by their immorality, and the places of others were soon made vacant by death. Is not this to learn the way of the wicked and to be like them in wandering away from the living God?

Days of the fathers in Ross-shire book

The several congregations in his district were visited by the minister, though he had the immediate oversight of the charge which was accounted the central or the most important. In these days of epidemics, if we knew that a certain house was tainted with disease, and if we saw a person who had come from it with the marks of the disease in his face; what should we feel?

In the Book of Numbers we read that Balak, son of Zippor, desired to vanquish Israel, and therefore he sent for Balaam, the son of Beor, saying, "Curse me Israel, and peradventure I shall prevail against them.

With difficulty do we save ourselves from this untoward generation. My heart fails me to speak concerning the destiny of the ungodly in another world.

Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Kennedy of Dingwall, in The Days of the Fathers in Ross-shire paints a dismal picture of the kirk as it was in 'Built in the form of a cross, with the pulpit at one of the angles, its barn-like roof unceiled, its windows broken, its doors all crazy, its seats ill-arranged, and pervaded by a dim uncertain light, it was a dismal dingy-looking place within.

John Kennedy, D. It is enough in reply to say, that they were not ordinary Christians of whom these things are affirmed. After prayer and praise, and the reading of a portion of Scripture, a certain number of the questions of the Shorter Catechism are asked and answered, and notes of the sermons heard during the day are repeated.

His article does however raise a number of questions.

Brother Christian, you carry much combustible matter in your nature, be warned when you see your neighbour's house on fire. In Tarbat and in Kincardine, in the Presbytery of Tain, there were godly ministers; in Kiltearn, and, for a short time, in Fodderty, in the Presbytery of Dingwall; and in Cromarty in the Presbytery of Chanonry.

When I heard it, I said, "Thank God for it," for half her temptations are gone. Many of them just lost heart and left. Apparently, the Laird who was most opposed to the repairs lost much of his property by fire, the carpenter who declared the old church 'good and sufficient' was killed shortly afterwards and the lawyer who represented the heritors at the presbytery meeting went out of business.

John Kennedy. All rights reserved. Family tradition tells of a certain Kenneth Mackenzie, Sheriff of Inverness and Ross who was murdered in the castle by a smuggler called 'Black Calder'. It is a great feat of faith when the thing which naturally defiles is turned into a washpot. James Begg [q.

Its particular Gothic-style architecture is unusual in Scotland, a possible explanation being that influence was from the nearby fortress of Redcastle which had at that time reverted to the Crown.

Fraser said, 'for mine has been a better wife to me than any of yours has been to you. Kennedy was the leader in the highlands of the opposition to the projected union of the free and united presbyterian churches, and supported his friend Dr.

He puts his feet into the washpot, into the bath, into the basin, and then the clear, cool liquid is poured upon his feet; the washpot answering the sole purpose of holding the dirty water which has already passed over the man's flesh.

Not having thought with sufficient care on the subject, they deem them inconsistent with the standing rule of God's communings with His people, "in these last days. In the evening, district meetings are held They yield us some comfort, for which we are grateful to God, but it is only for our feet or lower nature; our head and heart find nobler joys.

Each found it his interest to acknowledge and advance the influence of the other. T HE field, on which I gathered materials for this book, would afford to a careful gleaner, a rich collection of interesting matter. I too fed him, clothed him, and found him a place of labor.

The Gospel in Ross

He was equally firm in opposing the disestablishment of Scottish presbyterianism, and greatly objected to the secularisation of the endowments.
